I remember those long drives with my family from our home town San Jacinto, California, to my Aunt Bessie and Uncle Wally's place in Monterey, California. My mother coming into my room so early in the morning, it was still dark outside. I'd sleepily put on some clothes and slowly pad my way downstairs and out to the car where I would fall right back to sleep in the back seat. By the time I woke up it was light out and we would be about 80 miles from home. My older sister would give me a pleasant 'good morning' and give me a tickle, invoking from me loud screeching laughter and thoroughly waking me up for the day. We'd soon stop for breakfast and make the first restroom break before reloading into the car for the first long leg of our full day drive. Before reaching Aunt Bessie's house we would make a lunch stop, usually at a restaurant of my request, with one or two restroom breaks in between, finally arriving at Aunt Bessie and Uncle Wally's house, after a couple more restroom breaks.

All in all, the trip was about nine hours filled with travel games, singing songs, bouts with carsickness, and my ever present requests for progress reports by asking my dad "are we there yet?" As I now look back on those annual trips to visit Aunt Bessie and Uncle Wally, I think about the activities my family would engage in to keep me occupied and the many memories I have of those trips, which were some of the fondest memories of time spent together.

I don't recall us experiencing the troubles other families seem to have on long trips. Perhaps it is selective memory but, I do remember the games we played and when I had to take a long trip with a young boy I brought some of those games out of my memory and we had a good time.

Here are some tips for traveling with children. A few I collected over time and some are from my memories of those long family drives in own childhood.

It might be wise to reconsider taking a scenic route. What an adult might find to be an enjoyable drive on a scenic route may be boring to children. If confined by seat belt or car seats, can the children see out the window or are they too short to actually see the sights? Also, keep in mind that most scenic routes tend to curve and wind quite a bit which can cause motion sickness. Many times the scenic route is longer, adding more time in the car and adding many more of those "are we there yet" questions.

Games and activities can help occupy the time of a long drive. Bring along coloring books or picture books or even some Mad-Libs where everybody can participate. My clever sister would create her own travel bingo games for us. She would draw the grid and write in the boxes things for us to look for. I recall some items she wrote in were U-Haul truck, a dog in a car, a boy wearing a hat, and things like that. Other popular games included the alphabet games where we look for the letters on passing road signs from A to Z. 'I spy' was always popular for keeping my attention focused on the scenery. Adding up the numbers on license plates the fastest was fun and helped me to improve my mathematical skills.

One thing I found useful on the trip I took as an adult with a young friend was taking a map of our trip and placing a colored star sticker by the major cities and towns we would travel through. I would let him know which colored star we were at along the way and, if he was well behaved, I had a small gift or toy for him when we reached each star. Come to think of it, he didn't have to ask me 'are we there yet' because he saw for himself exactly where we were.

Nowadays the book stores often carry audio books. Listening to a story over the car stereo system can entertain the whole family. This method was my first introduction to some classic children stories. I recall my sister reading Charlotte's Web in particular.

It is a good idea to wake up sleepers just before arriving at one Stop by your plan to get them to write for yourself and be refreshed and ready to be out of the car.

With these tips in the long drive can be a little more fun and can bring a family closer together.

About the Ferries

The older ferries are double-decked and seating is available both inside and outside on the decking, offering great views of the harbor.

Special tickets that allow discount travel are also on offer. Sites on the Inner Harbor

On the western side of the bridge, the Harbor Circle walk takes approximately eight hours.

Sunny Beach is a bustling tourist resort in Bulgaria that is rapidly rising in popularity. So if you're got a holiday booked to this stunning Black Sea resort then what is there to do when you get there?

Firstly, this is a very lively place. It boasts a tourist strip that is almost 6 miles long that follows the shoreline and lays directly on the beach. On this strip you will find literally hundreds of bars and restaurants that are open until the early hours in the morning. These trips often last half a day to a whole day and take you our of the bustling tourist resorts and off-road into the wilderness where you can visit traditional Bulgarian villages, take in the countryside and see some of the locals making local products such as cheese, wines and rose oil.

Activities in Sunny Beach, Bulgaria also include catamaran trips and boat trips. Most of these leave from the nearby port of Nessebar and take you through the calm waters of the Black Sea often including a stop for snorkeling where you will be able to see the local sea life, although beware of the large numbers of jellyfish in some parts of these waters.

Finally, things to do in Sunny Beach obviously includes shopping. Sunny Beach boasts literally thousands of individual stalls and shops that line the long promenade and lead back into the town centre. You cannot walk anywhere in Sunny Beach without have shops and stalls tempting you with local goods. For something slightly more upmarket you may wish to visit the Sunny Beach Mall which boasts some high class clothes shops and electrical stores. The stands and normal shops around the main strip are often open until the early hours of the morning, however note that the Sunny Beach Mall closes at 10pm.

Oyster stew: Recipes Healthy Holiday.

When our kids were young if you said "oyster stew" they would grimace and exclaim, "Yuk!" Other kids in the extended family had the same eaction. But eating oyster stew on Christmas Eve was a family tradition. How could I get our kids to keep it?

Family members came up with a plan. Kids would be required to taste one spoonful of stew and then they could eat something else. As the years passed, however, one spoonful of stew became two, then three, then trying an oyster, and finally, eating a whole bowl of soup. Now my adult kids love oyster stew.

The original Britsh recipe - oysters, butter, cream, salt and pepper - was based on staple foods of the time. Over time this recipe made its way to America. "The Boston Cooking-School Cook Book," orignally published in 1890 and edited by Fannie Farmer, contains four recipes for oyster stew. One is the British recipe, only milk is substituted for cream.

The second recipe, Cream of Oyster Soup, is thickened with flour and contains onion, celery, and mace. The third recipe, Oyster Soup, Amsterdam Style, is made with cream and calls for celery salt. And the fourth recipe, Bisque of Oysters, Capucine, contains cream, egg yolks, nutmeg, and peas, of all things.

"The Victory Cook Book, Wartime Edition," first published in 1943, has three recipes for oyster stew: Bisque of Oysters (thickened with flour and stale bread crumbs), Oyster Stew (the British recipe), and Thickened Oyster Stew based on a white sauce.

Today, oyster stew recipes are posted on the Internet and many are still loaded with butter, cream, and salt. I'm eating healthier these days. Could I come up with a slimmer version of oyster stew? The only way to find out was to make a test batch.

Instead of cream or whole milk I used skim milk. I eliminated the four teaspoons of salt most recipes call for and added flavor with red pepper, onion power, and a bay leaf. Better yet, I reduced the high fat content (as much as two cups of butter!) to two tablespoons of butter and a tablespoon of olive oil. My Updated Oyster Stew was rich-tasting, creamy, and packed with flavor. Here's the recipe - just in time for the holidays.

UPDATED OYSTER STEW

INGREDIENTS: 1 pound shucked oysters and their liquid; 2 tablespoons butter; 1 tablespoon olive oil; 1 1/2 tablespoons minced red pepper; 1/4 cup Wondra flour; 3 1/2 cups skim milk; 2 teaspoons onion powder; 2 teaspoons celery salt; 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce; freshly ground pepper to taste; 1 bay leaf; 2 teaspoons snipped fresh parsley

Put the oysters and their liquid in a small saucepan. Heat the oysters over low heat until the edges start to curl. Cover pan and set oysters aside.

Melt butter and olive oil in a large saucepan. Add minced red pepper and saute until tender. Stir in Wondra flour and cook for 30 seconds. Using a whisk, slowly add milk to the flour mixture. Cook soup base over medium heat, whisking constantly, until slightly thickened. Add seasonings, bay leaf and parsley. Gently stir oysters into soup base. Cover stew and keep warm over low heat for 15 minutes to blend flavors. (Don't ever let the stew boil.) Remove bay leaf. Serve stew in warm bowls with oyster crackers or saltines. Makes 5-6 servings.

All customers get a set of crayons and are encouraged to draw on the tables. The best drawings are placed on the wall.

Phuket is one of Thailand's most popular tourist destinations, and yet visitor numbers are well down on previous year. The beaches and streets in Phuket are quiet and businesses are beginning to feel the strain. Thailand's political problems have been well documented by the media, so much so that the country is portrayed as being in complete anarchy. Although the problems have been centered in Bangkok, they have impacted Phuket. But what's the reality of the situation? Should tourists be wary of traveling to Phuket?

The short answer is "no". For a bit of perspective, Thailand has had numerous problems over the years, from coups to bombings. However, it was only the tsunami that really affected tourism in the long run. Thailand's internal problems usually create a few short-term ripples and the media writes of chaos in the streets, but for people living in Thailand, they will tell you that life goes on as usual.

In Phuket, tourism is way down. Hotels are nowhere near full and people on the island are saying that the effect on the industry will be worse in the long term than the tsunami. It's such a dire situation, but it's also completely unnecessary. Travel advisory warnings also don't help.

If you were to visit Phuket right now you'd see a peaceful island. There are no more dangers than normal and everything is safe. The last time I stayed at the Opus, I arrived during a nighttime drizzle and melodic thumping as hipsters moved in and out of the doorway leading to not just a hotel, but a cool scene in the Yaletown area in Vancouver, British Columbia. As unhip as I am, I never felt out of place.

Two years later, I arrived during a daytime drizzle and, this time, something even cooler, about thirty degrees cooler. This time I arrived in Montréal - in the winter. I remained as unhip as ever.

This is the second Opus Hotel, which opened about a year and half ago, and has all the stylish charms that the original in Vancouver has, perhaps more. Visitors familiar with the Vancouver Opus will recognize the distinctively styled rooms, each with a unique "character," which come with a 27 inch television/computer and a mix of high-thread count sheets and technology, rooms that are good for both business and relaxing. During my stay, I did plenty of both.

However, I did get out of my room, but not always to leave the hotel. There is an infectious flair at the Opus and on a Friday night the place is jumping. I highly recommend a visit to the Opus' bar/restaurant, Koko. At Koko, guests can expect fine dining and a trendy atmosphere with light house music in the background. While my entire meal was delicious, the Malted Kulfi with caramelized bananas - using seven kinds of chocolate - is a must. Fortunately, there is an on-site gym at the Opus to work the Kulfi off.

The Opus in Montréal is centrally located in the Entertainment district on the corner of Sherbrooke Street and St.-Laurent Boulevard, which I found ideal for strolling through the immediate area with some fun pedestrian walkways, but only 15 minutes by foot from downtown, which was not too far even in winter.
Outside of the Opus, Montréal still has a trendy streak that I found everywhere. Here are a few of my favorites that I discovered along the way:

For a taste of Montréal on the go, bagels are akin to having a Vienna Dog in Chicago. Since 1957, St. Viateur Bagel makes bagels that are somehow a little different and better that the ones I grew up eating in Los Angeles. They are warm, chewy and deliciously baked 24-hours a day.

opusdg400cFor a festive Greek flavor and a lively party scene try Trinity Restaurant. The chef here blends tradition Greek fare with contemporary tastes to fuse something familiar presented in a new way.

Finally, for that after dinner drink, check out Baldwin Barmacie. Show up before 10PM before the crowd for a seat. After 10PM visitors can expect a casual but packed atmosphere.

And even with the drizzle and a chilly winter that accompanied me in Montréal, it was nice to know I had the Opus waiting for me when I returned.

o cicadas, locusts, mantises, crickets, and grasshoppers which are all deep fried and are rather crunchy;

o bamboo worms, which are also deep fried;

o giant water bugs, which are steamed; they are also ground into a paste with chili and eaten with sticky rice;

o weaver ants (red ants with a painful bite) and their eggs; sticky rice is dipped into a mixture of ants, eggs, and chili;

o dung beetles; which add a wholesome flavor to curries; however, many people will not eat them because they live in and on excrement.

In addition, Thai people will eat

o the pupae of silk moths and other moths and butterflies; you must first remove the pupae from their cocoons, then boil them until soft with a pinch of salt, finally sautée them lightly;

o the larvae of wasps and bees; these are deep-fried;

and arachnids:

o giant tarantulas, which are also grilled.

I have not seen other spiders eaten, but I suspect if it moves, it is considered food somewhere.

Where I lived in Bangkok, Sukhumvit Soi 4, every night starting around 5:00 PM, there was a street vendor with half a dozen kinds of fried and grilled insects and scorpions; her customers were mainly the bar girls in the area. Every night she was quite busy as the girls consider these insects a tasty snack, and munch on them as frequently as Western people munch on potato chips.

The lady vendor does not speak any English, but will pose with her wares for a photograph if you give her a 20 baht (about 60 cents) tip. And if you're brave, you could always buy a bag of deep fried bamboo worms.

Most travelers have heard of Phuket which has been Thailand's number one tourist destination for years with its white sand beaches and nightlife, but many other places are starting to get popular. Southern Thailand is well known for its white sand beaches and cheap food and accommodation; while Phuket is the most popular destination in southern Thailand, Trang, Krabi, Koh Samui, Hat Yai and Songkla have gained on Phuket.
While southern Thailand is mostly knwn for its beaches and tropical islands, their is a beautiful rainforest in Khao Sok which is even older than the Amazon rainforest in Khao Sok which is only now starting to be popular. So if you your down south and wanting to discover more than just white sand beaches, Khao Sok is only a few hours from Phuket and is a totally unique experience.
Trang is gaining popularity amongst tourists and has been a favourite for the local Thai people. There is many small Islands around which have beautiful resorts. One thing that Trang has is great snorkeling, with the right conditions I would have to say it is unmatched if you compare it to anywhere in Thailand. The water is clear with beautiful long stretches of coral and tropical fish to be seen. If you do decide to go to Trang and snorkel, you have to visit the emerald cave. It is a beach that can only be reached via going through a small cave which is about 100 meters long in the side of a cliff the side of an island. It is not a cave you walk through, you have to swim through it and can only be accessed at certain times due to the tide.
With cheap prices and stunning snorkeling, it is hard to see Trang not getting a lot more popular over the next decade.
Krabi is very similar to Phuket with its nice white sand beaches, it is a little less crowded and has the best rock climbing at Railay beach which is a short, cheap, speedboat ride away. If ou like a more peiceful holiday but with a bit of action, Krabi is a nice place to visit.
Koh Samui has gotten very popular over the last decade and has much better beaches than Phuket, You can go on scubba diving tours in Koh Tao which is close to Koh Samui and is rated by many as the best in Thailand for diving. Koh Samui has been a little over developed over the years and has lost its uniqueness with western franchises stringing up everywhere. Still a nice Island to visit but is very touristy.
Hat Yai and Songkla are Other attractions are less popular. It is an evolving slowly at these two locations is a great place if you want a better experience, and experience the real Thailand and Thai culture better.

Most local expats have at least visited the Bluefin Tavern as its food is excellent and the atmosphere is really enjoyable. It is well known for its wonderful Tex Mex dishes and great pizzas. This Kata restaurant is also a great place to head down to if you want to watch live sporting events on a large screen.

This eatery is part of the Marina Phuket Resort and is situated right next to the water. It is an ideal location for those of you that love the finest fresh seafood.

This long white sandy beach is also home to some of the finest seafood restaurants of the island. This wonderful location generally only gets a bit crowded during the high season. There are a few resorts located in the Surin area however this area of the island is generally better known for its high end real estate projects.
Patong Beach
Patong beach is one of the most crowded beaches however many travelers certainly seem to prefer this. Breakfast is served on-deck before guests are invited to explore a unique Sea Gypsy Village and experience a boat ride through the mangroves in search of hidden lagoons.
After visiting the Sea Gypsy's, sail onwards and southwards to the clear green waters of Krabi. This is time to stretch out on the sun-soaked decks whilst enjoying icy cold cocktails and the panoramic splendour of the tropical view. Today also exemplifies the real benefit of yacht sailing as the Suwan Macha discovers deserted powder-white beaches for swimming, snorkeling and some private sun-bathing.
As the afternoon draws to an end clients are treated to their second Andaman Sea Sunset followed by a table laden with Thai Food to enjoy beneath the stars on-deck.
Yacht Sailing from Krabi to the Phi Phi Islands (Day 3)
one more morning, one more anchorage, one more feast for the senses topped-up with breakfast on-deck! The theme today is Tropical Island hopping. The ultimate destination is Koh Phi Phi but between there and the anchorage in Krabi are scattered many smaller islands and a chance to snorkel, swim and sunbathe occur in series.
Once at Koh Phi Phi, guests have a chance to go ashore to explore before returning to yacht in time to catch their final Andaman sunset aboard the Suwan Macha followed by the now ubiquitous smorgasbord of Thai food served up on-deck.
The Beach, the Bay and Return (Day 4)
As Koh Tapu became a lure for tourism after being featured in The Man with the Golden Gun, Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi Ley seduced viewers movie-goers by its astonishing, hypnotic and mesmerizing beauty when it became the backdrop in the 2000 drama film "The Beach" starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Maya Bay is the final destination for the Suwan Macha 4 day cruise.
Unfortunately Maya Bay now attracts boatload after boatload of tourists on a daily basis who descend on "The Beach" for a glimpse of paradise. Phuket has a mixed reputation, partially deserved but also partially unfair. The first image that pops into many people's minds is the overdeveloped and rather seedy stretch of Patong beach. However, remember that this is just a small part of a big island and is easily avoided if that's not your thing.
Recently, my family and I stayed at Kamala beach, a bit further north of Patong and a world apart. Kamala is quiet, with no accommodation built directly on or behind the beach. It is a beautiful natural cove offering great photo opportunities and peace and quiet. Another advantage (for me) is the lack of vendors on the beach, here you really will be able to relax without having to refuse the Henna tattoo and doughnut sellers every 5 minutes!
We chose Kamala because it seemed ideal, having a young family. We didn't want to be in an area that was too crowded, but still with a nice beach and swimmable sea. We stayed in the Marriott Courtyard, and it was a choice between either that one or the Marriott Courtyard on neighbouring Surin beach (I had a promotional offer to use up at one of these two hotels). As we were travelling with my in-laws (who are Thai) the choice was simple. Surin was badly affected by the Tsunami and many people died, especially in the Courtyard hotel. Kamala was left untouched. Thai people fear ghosts and that is a big reason why tourism was slow to recover in the affected areas. They wouldn't even entertain the idea of staying at Surin for fear of upsetting any trapped souls. So...Kamala it was! If you wish to pay your respects while in Phuket there are a few memorial sites around the island. At the southern end of Kamala there is a monument just behind the little river that runs behind the beach and a little grassed area and pavilion.
What to do in Phuket when you get bored of the beach and the hotel pool though....well there is a lot! We hired a car so it made accessing these places easy for us, but the "songthaews" are regular and there's always a taxi or your hotel will usually arrange something for you. Of course we sampled the more family orientated activities, starting off at the rather more off-the-beaten-track Gibbon Rehabilitation Sanctuary.
This is worth a visit, even if slightly out of the way, to do your bit for a good cause. The centre is run by volunteers (European when we visited) and attempts to rehabilitate gibbons that were orphaned by poachers or kept as pets. They go through several stages of training before being released back into the wild, although of course some don't make it. The only ones you can see are the latest arrivals who are still used to a lot of human contact, as they develop through the programme they are moved further into the rainforest and away from human contact. There are a couple of nice trails you can walk while here, a few refreshment stalls and elephant rides. If you're interested, the staff are happy to talk to you about their programme as well.
Following on the animal theme we then visited Phuket Aquarium and it's related attractions. Most people only look around the aquarium itself and then go, and the aquarium is fairly sizeable although beginning to look a little shabby. They do have a great selection, and some especially large fish that scared my daughter! If you're travelling with kids this is a great way to entertain them for a couple of hours. If you've got an appetite for some more, the entrance fee also gets you into the "Baby Farm" as my daughter called it! It's a building at the back of the main aquarium where they run breeding programmes for many varied species of sea life. Be careful if you go in there as the Thai's are never that hot on health and safety, there are plenty of opportunities to fall over! And just a bit further down the road is a small facility that breeds turtles.
Phuket Zoo is, in my own opinion, a grim place best avoided. Sure if you have a little child, they probably will enjoy it and again it's a good way to pass some time. But any older children may be upset by the cramped and dirty enclosures and the obviously stir-crazy animals. A lot of the facilities appear uncared for and dirty. This place does have a poor reputation and fully deserved, if you can....stay away.
If temples are your thing there are plenty of those to visit. We went to the Phuket Big Buddha, which is really only accessible on wheels, it's a 6km winding road up a big hill. But when at the top you are rewarded with magnificent views all around. The Buddha itself wasn't complete when we visited in October 2009 but was still a magnificent sight. Also worth a look in is Wat Chalong, probably one of the most visited temples in Phuket. We were (or rather I was) treated to a procession of Miss Teen Thailand contestants in the temple grounds during our visit!
If you find that you need to hit the shops then Phuket Town should cater for your needs, as well as the nearby hyper-global-mega malls (!!) of Big C and Central Festival. Phuket offers many superb photos opportunities and if you're able to hire a car, I'd recommend a trip to one of the many viewpoints (they're shown on any good map). You can get some spectacular sunset shots.

1. Quad biking - probably one for the guys but the rain makes quad biking much, much more fun, with puddles to splash through and mud to slide on. Yes you will get very wet and very muddy but it will be worth it i assure you!
2. Spa Treatment - probably one for the girls whilst their partners are out quad biking! Get into the dry and relax with a spa treatment. There are a million and one treatments available and all at very cheap prices compared to western spas.
3 - Shopping - Always a favorite rainy day activity wherever you are. Phuket has a number of indoor shopping centers with underground parking so you never have to step into the rain. Central Shopping Mall, Big C, Tesco-Lotus, Ocean Plaza and Robinsons Department Store around Phuket Town or Jungceylon in Patong are all big indoor centers worth a look.
4 - bowling/laser tag/cinema - The Jungcelon in Patong has a number of indoor activities beyond shopping such as laser games or live gun shooting, 10 pin bowling and a cinema. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants so really there is something for everyone. I always head hear when the Phuket weather turns nasty!
5 - Go for a swim - most People tend to avoid the pool or beach when a downpour But so much fun swimming in the rain and hot weather because Phukets; Whether it is rain or not rain makes little difference Epeiuฝn!

The first step in the land dividing process is to make sure there are no outstanding loans or liens on the land. This should be checked at the local land office to make sure you have the latest copy of the land title. It is always wise to double check the land at the sub district office also. They usually know the story more often on a piece of land then the big land office might. The reason to check this is because land that has money owed on it cannot be split or divided legally.
Once you have determined that the land in Phuket is free and clear and there are no liens of any kind on the land, you can start the land splitting process. This can takes from a few weeks in some smaller rural areas to several months like here in Phuket. A little tea money or" Nam Cha" will get your paperwork to the top of the paper pile quicker. If you're not in a hurry, well just submit the application and wait your turn. 1. Visit the museum. But which one? First, The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, then the American Museum of Natural History nearby and finally the MOMA - Museum of Modern Art - if there's time. As a child I used to thrill at getting lost in the seemingly endless arrays of fascinating rooms among its many floors with my mother trying to keep up while describing the Romanesque and Greek paintings, the medieval costumed horses and life-like statues and Egyptian basement temple. 7. Eat What The Locals Eat. Food, of course, has to be on every travel itinerary or else it's incomplete. If you're a meat-eater you will be pleasantly surprised to find that the city boasts the best barbeques north of Tennessee. For those who enjoy the nightlife in Phuket there is none better then that found in Patong Beach. The town has many discos and a nightlife like no place else in the world. Patong has been voted the number one nightlife spot my several men's magazines. The many beer bars and night spots can be fun to explore is a relaxed and laid back attitude one would expect to find in the islands of the Andaman Sea.
If you find you want to get away from the average tourist hangouts, Phuket town can offer some interesting shows and live entertainment. It even has some great festivals like vegetarian festival and Chinese New Year's.

Picture an island nestling in the calm, azure blue waters of the Gulf of Thailand fringed by coral reefs with beaches of powder soft white sand framed by a backdrop of coconut trees, their fronds dancing in the gentle breeze. The palms stretch upward to the central uplands, thick with lush tropical vegetation. The coast and lower slopes are awash with coconut palms making Koh Samui the ‘Coconut Capital of Thailand’. It is said the island sends 2,000.000 coconuts per month to Bangkok. This green vista is interspersed occasionally by black granite boulders. Some of these rock formations appear to defy gravity by hanging dramatically against the hillside. This tropical paradise is called Koh Samui. A 250 square kilometre rounded island which is about the same size as Penang.
Koh Samui translates from Koh, the Thai word for island, and Samui, which is probably derived from the Chinese “saboey” meaning safe harbour. The magic island first came to the attention of world travellers when it started to crop up in conversation in many of the cheap hotels that then clustered around Bangkok’s Hualamphong Railway station some 45 years ago. It was difficult to get to, requiring special negotiation with fishermen in Suratthani lying 80 kilometres across the sea on the mainland. When you reached the island, there was no road and so those intrepid voyagers hopped from beach to beach by boat. In the past forty plus years things have changed hugely.
The island is now served by an international airport that looks more like a botanical garden than the accepted tradition of functional ‘air station’. Flights leave hourly for the new Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok and link the island to additional destinations such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Pattaya and Phuket. A 52-kilometre road rings Samui and links all the major towns. Nathon the capital plays host to government buildings and banks and serves as one of the ferry ports serving the Thai mainland. The road skirts the 635-metre mountain that sits centrally astride the landmass and takes in the main resorts of Lamai and Chaweng. Lamai is the smaller of the two and offers a quieter and perhaps cleaner beach. The latter caters for, perhaps, a younger and more energetic visitor. Further on lies Bangrak is better known as “Big Buddha Beach” as it takes its name from the huge Buddha statue at the eastern end of the bay. Borphut boasts a trendy fisherman’s village, much favoured by French tourists and Maenam to the north offers spectacular views across to Koh Phangan and the Ang Thong Natural Marine Park.
This area is much less crowded than the bustling Chaweng and the marginally quieter Lamai. It still retains its original Thai flavour. However, to get to grips with authentic ‘Samui’ you need to rent a car or motorbike and take one of the many roads that lead up away from the coast and into the mountain. As you climb higher you come to rubber plantations and hidden away villages clustering around paddy fields, still hanging onto a traditional way of life that is far removed from the tourist dominated hotels, resorts, restaurants and bars that cluster around the coast.

I have visited Vancouver a few times. My sister lived there but has moved to Prince George (mad, I know).
It's a most beautiful city with just lots to do and see and with something for everyone. I loved Chinatown; it's the second biggest after San Francisco; it's full of markets. Dim Sum is a must at any of the many restaurants and it's inexpensive. Gastown is the old part of the city and great for shopping.
We had dinner at The Top Of Vancouver Restaurant which does one complete revolution in 60 minutes great but go easy on the wine.
Grouse Mountain is only 15 mins from downtown Vancouver and you can take a Sky ride(Cable Car) the mile journey to the top. This gives the best views you could every have of a city and its harbour. It's possible to Ski on Grouse; it has 26 runs so you could have a city break with a few days skiing to keep everyone happy.
We took the ferry to Vancouver Island and stayed at the Empress Hotel in Victoria, very nice, very expensive but worth it for a few nights, you only live once. The Butchart Gardens on some 55 acres are worth a visit.
The highlight of the trip was the drive from Vancouver-Kamloops-Banff-Jasper, I have never seen such beautiful scenery.
Jasper, Banff and Lake Louise National Parks are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It was April when I was there and you could still see the snow capped mountains. For anyone who likes walking, hiking or camping this would be paradise.
All in all Vancouver and the Rockies has so much to offer to everyone young and old and it doesn't matter what time of year.

Despite Starbucks announcing the launch of free, unrestricted Wi-Fi access for customers at their US coffee shops from June 1, Starbucks outlets in Phuket are still charging customers for using their Wi-Fi connections.
The Starbucks outlets at Central Festival Phuket and on Patong beach road charge customers 150 baht per hour to use their wireless connections.
Customers buy a card with scratch-off strips revealing a temporary username and password for Wi-Fi access.
After logging on with the username and password on the card, a second page appears, requiring the customer to fill in more personal details before being allowed to continue.
KCS is the actual Phuket Starbucks hot spot service provider. Registration on this second page requires entering a full name, a passport or ID number and an email address.
This registration requirement (as stated on the login page) is to be "in compliance with the principle of the Computer Related Crime Act B.E. 2250″, which went in to effect in Thailand on June 10th, 2007.
The act outlines punishments for cyber crimes, such as the distribution of offensive materials and damage to people or property.
However, according to observers, Starbucks' June 1st announcement is a significant strategic move in the coffee shop 'Wi-Fi War', which could mean much greater profits than from simply charging individual customers to access the internet.
According to PCWorld columnist Mike Elgan, Starbucks will 'win the Wi-Fi War ', by giving free wireless internet access to customers.
However, Starbucks will control the branded content see by customers when they log on.
Customers logging on to the "Starbucks Digital Network" will have free access to publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and USA Today. Apple iTune downloads, restaurant reviews and a 'Wellness Channel' are also part of the package, says Mike Elgan.

The main airlines that the airport caters to are Thai Airways, Silk Air and Malaysian Airlines. There are also a number of budget carriers that flight here, such as Thai AirAsia, Tiger Airways, Firefly and Nok Air. Once you have gotten past baggage clearance, you can choose to take the limousine taxis, metered taxis or minibus services to get to your intended destination. There are also airport shuttles which run every half an hour or so. These shuttles will drop you off at Phuket Town bus station where you can hop onto local buses that will take you to all the major beaches in Phuket.
By Bus - If you are on mainland Thailand in places such as Bangkok, Hat Yai or Krabi, you can reach Phuket by bus. The Por Tor or Hungry Ghost Festival of Phuket is an ancient religious ceremony originating from a Chinese tradition. In the seventh month of the lunar calendar, it is believed that the spirits of the ancestors descend to revisit their earthly homes. Spirits are usually feared in Thai culture, but the Por Tor Festival of Phuket is a happy, auspicious occasion.
Food and cakes are offered to placate the hungry spirits, which earns merit and good fortune for the worshippers. The festival is a colourful testament to the Chinese presence in Thailand and the intertwining of the two cultures. This unique occasion offers travellers an inside look at the deep religious and cultural history of the famous island.
The celebrations are centred around the Por Tor Kong Shrine in Bang Neaw, located centrally in Phuket Town. It takes place for about two weeks in August. It is believed that Por Tor Kong (the god of devils, who rules the underground) opens the gates of the spirit world to allow the Spirits to return to the earth during these two weeks. The shrine itself is colourfully and intricately decorated in the style of Chinese temples, and is worth a visit.
During the festival the shrine is bustling with activity as worshippers come from all over the island to bring offerings for their ancestors. Visitors will see mountains of red cakes shaped like turtles being offered at the shrine. The turtle symbolises longevity in Thai culture, while red represents prosperity for the Chinese, so these turtle cakes will give the bearer a long, happy life. Other gifts of food are brought to feed the spirits and are presented with incense sticks and prayers.
While you are at the shrine, you may have the opportunity to watch a likay, a traditional Thai performance. Look for a stage set up near the shrine, or just listen for loud music and singing, and you will be guided to the event. A likay is a traditional form of entertainment, incorporating singing, dancing, music and colourful costumes for an exciting show.

Baseball road trips are becoming increasingly popular with baseball fans of all ages, and for good reason. Not only can fans enjoy America's official past time, but major league cities offer great sightseeing opportunities and the chance to soak up some local culture.
Quite possibly the best baseball city in America is Chicago. The city is convenient for flights from just about anywhere, and of course there are two well known teams, the White Sox and the Cubs. So whether you're a National or American league fan, it doesn't matter as you can get your fill of each in Chicago.
Chicago's Ballparks
Both Wrigley Field and U.S. Cellular Field (formerly Comiskey Park) are located in Chicago's city limits, and each are fairly near the lake front. Both ballparks are easy to reach if you are staying downtown near many of the shopping and dining attractions.
U.S. Cellular Field, located in the south side neighborhood of Bridgeport, opened in 1991 and has been remodeled a handful of times since. In contrast with Wrigley Field, concourses are wide, parking is ample, and tickets are generally available on the day of a game. The park is located on 35th Street, directly across the street from original Comiskey Park, whose former home plate location is marked with a commemorative plaque.
The neighborhood itself is largely residential, but there are some local restaurant gems within five minutes or so. Two of note are Schaller's Pump, the oldest continually operating restaurant/bar in Chicago, and Bertucci's Corner, serving some of the best Italian food in the city at working mans prices.
Approximately eight miles north is the neighborhood known as Wrigleyville, best known for Wrigley Field. Fortunately, the city's above ground rail line stops just steps away from Wrigley Field.
For something to eat or drink around Wrigley Field, just follow the crowds. There are ample options in all price ranges, from casual sports bar fare to fine dining. If you're a beer fan, an outpost of the famed Goose Island Brewery is just a few blocks away.
